Everyone knows New York City, the city of unlimited possibilities. It is impossible to mention all the curiosities, but this list will show the top of the iceberg. We will describe the 5 boroughs of the city: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx en Staten Island.
Manhattan is located on the famous island between the Hudson and the East River and is the most visited spot of New York. With its 1.6 million citizens, it has the highest density of population and its giant skyscrapers are world famous. In the middle of all the buildings is the huge Central Park, with a surface of 341 hectare and 25 million visitors a year. The magical shows on Broadway, but even off-Broadway and off-off-Broadway, are definitely worth a visit. And if you are in the neighborhood, you can also see the well known Times Square with its gigantic buildings and billboards.
Brooklyn is the borough with the most inhabitants, about 2.5 million. It contains a long coastline and includes Coney Island, one of the oldest amusement parks of the area. The district is a melting-pot of many different cultures. More than 40% of the citizens is of a foreign origin. Also, the Brooklyn museum is found here, one of New York’s most prominent art museums.
Queens is the biggest of the boroughs and has 2.2 million people are living there. The New York Mets can be seen in the famous Citi Field stadium and for tennis fans there is the USTA National Tennis Center, where the US Open is played. Another top-site is the Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, which is used for two world exhibitions and where interesting remaining can be found.
The Bronx is one of the origins of the rap and hip-hop culture. However, the most northly borough has much more to offer. About 28 square kilometers, which means 20% of the district, consists of parks and green open areas. It is the district of the New York Botanical Garden and the Bronx Zoo, a fascinating zoo. Additionally, a lot of culture and sports can be found here, such as the stadium of the New York Yankees.
The last of the 5 boroughs is Staten Island. This district has the most ‘village-like’-feeling, although this area is the home of almost 500.000 citizens. It has a lot of parks and museums, one of which is the beautiful open-air museum Historic Richmond Town.
It should be clear this is only a short summary of the culture and nature this metropolis has to offer. Besides the five boroughs, other things like the Statue of Liberty, the figurehead of the town on Liberty Island, and Ellis Island are definitely worth the visit. In New York City, one can never be bored.
